The National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of War Horse is coming to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in the Docklands this March.
Based on the novel by renowned children’s writer, Michael Morpurgo, and adapted by Nick Stafford, War Horse is now into its fourth year in London’s West End and is a continuous sell-out show at the New London Theatre.
The play has been seen by over 2.4 million people around the world since its debut at the National Theatre in 2007 and tells the story of a boy named Albert and his cherished horse Joey, who has been requested to fight for the English in World War I.
Joey ends up being caught in enemy cross-fire and serves for both sides of the war before ending up deserted in no man’s land. And so begins the tale of love, loyalty and friendship as Albert sets out on a dangerous journey to find him and bring him home.
War Horse features cutting-edge puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company which enables the audience to enjoy amazing life-sized horses on stage and the Broadway production has won 6 Tony Awards including a ‘Special Tony Award’ for puppetry and ‘Best Play’. The movie adaptation was directed by Stephen Spielberg in 2011 and was nominated for many awards, including 6 Oscars and 2 Golden Globes.
Michael Morpurgo is the author of over 100 books and was the third British Children’s Laureate from 2003 to 2005. His novel War Horse was runner-up for the 1992 Whitbread Book Award.
