Ayurveda, meaning ‘the science of life’ in Sanskrit, is an ancient form of medical science that originated in India at least 5,000 years ago.
Taken from the Vedic culture of India, Ayurveda is about living in harmony with the laws of nature. It is a traditional system for healing and good health that includes diet, yoga, meditation, herbal therapy and massage.
The focus of this system, unlike modern medicine which is concerned with the cure for a disease, is on prevention of disease through a healthy lifestyle that empowers the immune system.
Ayurveda views the body and mind as one unit to be treated together and is based on the idea that there are three “doshas” or forces in every living thing.
These forces are called vata, pitta and kapha and in order for a person to be in good health, these “doshas” need to be in balance. It is when they are out of balance that ill health occurs. The lifestyle that best suits a person is dependent on which of these “doshas” is out of balance.
Ayurvedic therapies can treat a whole range of symptoms including skin problems, low immunity, insomnia, anxiety and much more. In today’s fast-paced world, many of us are running on caffeine, stress and fast-food; feeling exhausted and unhealthy as a result.
Adopting the principals of Ayurveda leads to a life of vitality and full health by understanding what our bodies and minds really need.
