Formerly the Street Performance World Championship, Dublin’s Merrion Square will play host to a great free family festival this July – the newly rebranded Laya Healthcare’s City Spectacular.
This year, the festival is expanding, and the programme will include the likes of concerts, family picnics, artisan food events and outdoor screenings, alongside the world’s best street performers.
The event is a true collaboration between Dublin City Council, local businesses, arts organizations, and internationally renowned performance artists, all coming together to ensure a true celebration of the city, and highlighting that what makes our city spectacular.
The Free Festival in the Park, which runs from Friday 11th to Sunday, 13th July, will see street performers from Ireland and abroad in action, including the Lords of Strut, an Irish acrobatic, breakdancing, comedic, troupe, Aerial Manx, an Australian sword-swallower, and the fire-breathing duo of Dream State Circus.
Look out for the Go Metro music stage on the 12th and 13th July, which will be welcoming a ‘loud, lively and undeniably bop-worthy line-up’, according to the organisers, including Mr.Woodnote, Booka Brass Band and The Young Folk amongst many others.
There will be plenty of other activities taking place around Merrion Square throughout the weekend, like the Eat Street Food Village, the Layabout Area for those who just want to chill, Kid’s Court with Ray D’Arcy, and Live Print in the Park with Damn Fine Print, where you will have the opportunity to practice the art of screen-printing alfresco.
Other events planned around the city include walking tours, a Midsummers Night Dinner, a MarioKart 64 tournament, and The Last Days of Disco, a music event with live bands and Mother DJ’s honouring the renaissance of disco in Ireland.
The festival is a great way for Dubliners and visitors alike to discover or rediscover their city, inviting hundreds of thousands of people to enjoy the best of what the capital has to offer. Get out there and enjoy the city!
