Founded in 2007 by saxophonist and composer Nick Roth, the Yurodny Ensemble perform contemporary interpretations of traditional music from around the world alongside new work by composers inspired by these traditions.

Their debut at Pavilion Theatre is a concert celebration of the ten-year anniversary of the group and features the world premiere of a new suite entitled ‘Wave’ commissioned by the dlr LexIcon Musician-in-Residence award 2017.

Composed for the nine members of the Yurodny Ensemble, this new suite of music explores the significance of the port in the making of journeys, and asks wider social questions around the movements of peoples around the world. The inspiration for the suite draws on the power behind the emotive impact of the 2012 Na hEireannaigh Dhearmadta plaque on the East Pier, which reads ‘In commemoration of that generation of post-World War II emigrants who left their homes, counties and country from The Carlisle Pier, never to return. Often called “The Forgotten Irish”, this plaque recalls their contribution and their loss.’ Wave is therefore not merely a movement of water, but becomes a movement of the hand in parting gesture, and often, historically, in a final farewell.

PRESS QUOTES

Evenset is surely one of the most significant releases to come out of Ireland in decades.” – All About Jazz

This is huge and absolutely glorious. The spirit of a Zappa big band, but with Ukrainian traditional music in Ireland. [Haivka]..is more than my thesaurus can come up with enough words to describe. It’s wild, it’s big, it’s constantly changing…passion, loss and agony, intense, massively vivid, moving wonderfulness.” – fRoots Magazine
